TWENTY EIGHT

ALVA

“I THINK HE STOLE PART of my luggage. Scumbag.” The door fell shut and locked right after he slid into the carriage

“Could it also be that you stole his letter?”

He stared at her. Blank at first, but gradually he flashed her a charming smirk. “Perhaps,” he responded.

“Tsk-tsk. Still the little rascal and still stealing his brother's letters.” She flipped through the newspaper.

“I used to steal letters?” His tone hitched. He settled down close beside her.

“Yes. You found strange letters in Floyd's room and because you were so nosy, you stole them. Turns out, Floyd was writing to two different women,” she whispered the last sentence with a smirk.

“Right,” he said, staring into the abyss. “I saved hearts back then.”

She chuckled and blew the hair out of her face. “What was in the letter anyway?”

He sighed and dived deep into his pockets. His voice dipped as he said, “You know, this makes you an accomplice to the crime.”

“Yada, yada, yada. Give it to me.” She gathered the pieces of Floyd's letter in the folds of the newspaper. The carriage began its journey while she tried to puzzle the finicky pieces together.

“Ugh, did you have to ruin it like this? Wait, I got it.” She straightened her back. “Dear Yulia, there hasn’t been a moment where—who is Yulia?”

He put his arm on the back of her seat.

“He wanted to marry her at some point. His first choice, but I guess she caught onto his wandering eye.”

“Really? How did he meet Odette then?”

“Got her pregnant.”

“Excuse me?”

“What?”

“Nothing,” she muttered, flicking the destroyed letter off her newspaper.

“Nobody expected him to take responsibility, but he did, and I guess it’s because everyone wanted him to settle down.” Dante exhaled. “Man, did I need a break from him,” he said in a hoarse tone. He threw his head back and closed his eyes.

There was an attempt to read the finely printed columns of the newspaper, but her eyes quickly wandered to his spread legs. She blinked and averted her gaze when she caught herself.

Holy Hymns of Tsukai.

She used the newspaper to shield her view, but he sat so terribly close, she felt every movement of his body against hers. From the way he lifted his hips to get comfortable to the fingers that danced behind her shoulder.

She cleared her throat and observed the bustling streets that were jammed with pedestrians, their vehicles, their dogs, and—

His thigh bounced against hers. She flinched.

“I think I dreamt of you,” he said.

“Really? What was I doing?”

He smiled, but he kept his eyes closed, possibly reminiscing about the lost dream. His smile captivated her. It had something.

“I don't remember. I just saw your face.” He went through his hair. The well-groomed bangs fell into place. “What does it mean when a beautiful woman appears in your dream?” As his eyes opened, they instinctively latched onto hers.

“It means that...” She ruffled the newspaper, brushed non-existent dirt from her coat, and shook the hair out of her face. “I don’t know. You tell me.
